Interlock Ignition Device

What is an Ignition Interlock Device?

An Interlock Ignition Device (IID) is essentially a breathalyzer that is connected to the dashboard or steering wheel of your vehicle. It is designed to prevent the driver from starting the vehicle if his or her blood alcohol level exceeds the programmed limit – typically between .02 percent and .05 percent. If the device detects a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) that is above the limit, the driver will not be able to start the vehicle. Additionally, a camera will be installed with the IID to take a picture of the driver every time the device is used in order to discourage drivers from having someone else blow into the device.

What Happens if I am Convicted of a DUI?

Under Tennessee law, even first time DUI offenders, with a BAC of .08 or more, will lose his or her license for one year. However, the person is eligible for a restricted driver’s license if he or she installs an IID in the vehicle. In this example, the person is required to use an IID for at least six months as a condition of their restricted driver's licenses. This may be longer depending on the number of offenses and the unique circumstances of each case.

If you are required to operate a vehicle equipped with an IID, you are responsible for paying for the installation, the monthly leasing fee, and the costs of having the device uninstalled. The first year costs of using an IID can easily exceed $1,000.
